First Contact with Europe
The Hawaiian Islands remained isolated from the rest of the world until the latter half of the 18th century. It was in 1778 that Captain James Cook, a British explorer, made the first recorded European contact with Hawaii. Cook’s arrival marked the beginning of significant changes in Hawaiian society, politics, and governance.

Cook was followed by other Europeans and Americans, who brought with them not only new technologies and religions but also new political concepts. These ideas were vastly different from the traditional Hawaiian way of life, which was governed by a kapu (taboo) system under the rule of aliʻi (chiefs) and the kahuna (priests).
