Understanding Catastrophizing in Borderline Personality Disorder through the Story of Chicken Little

Having previously worked in the behavioral health field, I have had the privilege of working with many individuals diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD). Despite the common perception that these clients can be challenging, I’ve found the experience enriching. Their breakthrough moments — when they begin to see the world in a less threatening way — are some of the most gratifying aspects of my career. In sharing the story of Chicken Little and how it relates to people struggling with BPD, I hope to illuminate the struggles faced by those with BPD and foster a deeper understanding and empathy for their experiences.

This classic tale recounts a small chicken who panics after being hit on the head by an acorn, proclaiming that “the sky is falling.” At first glance, it may seem like a simple children’s story. Yet, Chicken Little’s dramatic reaction serves as a poignant metaphor for a common symptom experienced by individuals with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD): catastrophizing.
