The Top 5 States with the Worst Substance Abuse Problems
Accidental injuries, including drug overdoses, are now the leading cause of death for Americans aged 18 to 45. Among these, synthetic opioids like fentanyl are the deadliest. The opioid epidemic has reached catastrophic levels, claiming more than 105,000 lives in the 12 months ending November 2023, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Although slightly lower than its peak in May of the same year, this figure is double the rate recorded in 2015. Below, we explore the top five states grappling with the most severe substance abuse problems.
1) West Virginia
West Virginia is particularly hard-hit by the opioid crisis, with 78 deaths per 100,000 residents, the highest rate in the nation. This state’s struggles symbolize the more significant crisis affecting the Appalachian and coastal states. The prevalence of synthetic opioids like fentanyl, which is estimated to be 50 to 100 times more potent than morphine, has significantly exacerbated the problem. Fentanyl’s potency and its standard practice of being mixed with other drugs make it especially lethal.
