Over the past decade, concerns about teen mental health have intensified, particularly around the impact of social media. In spring 2023, United States Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, MBA, issued a crucial report, Social Media and Youth Mental Health, which not only presented compelling evidence of social media’s potential dangers to young people’s mental well-being but also underscored the urgency of addressing this issue. The American Psychological Association (APA) echoed this concern, highlighting the need for deeper investigation into this pressing issue.

Social media has become a crucial platform for teenagers who may feel isolated due to various reasons such as their location, social anxieties, or minority status. YouTube and TikTok are among the most popular platforms offering teens a space to express themselves and build a community. This is particularly beneficial for LGBTQ youth and those with disabilities as it provides them with a sense of belonging and hope.
