While we have long understood the importance of diet for physical health, the profound impact of nutrition on our mental health is gaining compelling attention. Emerging research now highlights that nourishing our bodies with the right foods can significantly enhance brain function and mood and even play a role in managing mental health conditions like depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia, and OCD, all linked to nutrient deficiencies. But how exactly does this work, and can making dietary changes complement conventional mental health treatments?
Serotonin, a key neurotransmitter for regulating sleep, appetite, and mood, is primarily produced in the gastrointestinal tract and influenced by beneficial gut bacteria. These bacteria protect the gut, reduce inflammation, aid nutrient absorption, and activate neural pathways connecting the stomach and the brain.
