Decluttering Digital Files: A Spring Cleaning Guide for Your Digital Space

I still haven't found the passport; however, I did find my social security card, which I haven’t seen in God knows how long, so I am making progress!

Is your digital space like mine? Is it overflowing with documents, photos, and other unknown stuff? I have some tips to help you declutter that, too!

Here are five more tips to help you declutter your digital files effectively:

1. Create a Simple, Hierarchical Structure

Start by establishing a clear, hierarchical folder structure. Think of it as creating a digital filing cabinet where everything has its place. Use broad categories like “Work,” “Personal,” “Finance,” and “Photos” to begin, and then create subfolders within these categories for more specific items. For example, within “Photos,” you might have subfolders for different years or events.

This works for email, too, but it also helps clean up your home screen if you have a ton of stuff saved to make it easier to find for later reference.

2. Adopt a Consistent Naming Convention

Be consistent with how you name your files and folders. This might mean starting file names with the date (in YYYY-MM-DD format for…
