ADHD and Me: Lessons in Parenting, Productivity, and Perseverance
I struggle with ADHD as an adult, and I have been working to get my house more organized in a way that I can function without this interfering with life, but boy, is it hard sometimes.
I have a son who is a senior in high school and a 6th-grade daughter. Both attend an online virtual school, but it is close to homeschooling without me having to plan their curriculum.
Some days, I spend all day assisting with homework and trying to walk them through assignments, as both of them have ADHD as well. My oldest is medicated, but my youngest is not. Ultimately, I spend a lot of time redirecting them so they can stay on task. This also requires lots of breaks for us too.
I am 41 years old, and I graduated high school in the year 2000, so I don’t know if my memory has started to decline or if kids are given a lot more challenging work and total assignments than they used to when I was either of their ages. The even crazier part is that their math is not that much different even though the classes have a 6-year difference. She is learning how to graph, and he is learning ordered pairs.
My daughter is doing prealgebra, and while I don’t mind helping either of them, I get so wrapped up in helping I sometimes forget things, like today…I had a meeting, and I totally spaced it until the person I was meeting messaged me! It can also be challenging to juggle all of this while trying to run a business full-time with limited funds.
